Writing was going to destroy memory. The printing press was going to spread dangerous ideas. Calculators were going to ruin math. The internet was going to rot our brains. And now AI is going to end thinking, steal jobs, drink the water, and break reality.
It’s the oldest panic in human history, the fear that the next tool will ruin us. So this week we brought in the man who started the argument: Socrates, who warned in Plato’s Phaedrus that writing would weaken memory. (The only reason we know he said it is that somebody wrote it down.) And across the table, the man who built the method to answer him: Sir Francis Bacon, the father of the scientific method, who said “knowledge is power”, and meant it as a warning as much as a promise.
The thesis isn’t “AI is good.” It’s that being against AI because people misuse it, is like being against databases because someone built a bad one. Writing didn’t create lies, it preserved them. Printing didn’t create propaganda, it scaled it. Databases didn’t create surveillance, institutions chose it. AI didn’t create bad incentives, it just exposes and accelerates them. The tool was never the question. The question is who controls it, who profits, who pays, and who’s responsible. A tale as old as time, it’s the hand, not the tool.
Not against AI. Against cowards hiding behind it.
